This is close, but is a misinterpretation from quotes about when they sang the song
in front of an audience for the first time. They did, in fact, write the song backstage one night. But it was backstage at The
Vanguard coffee
house in Kansas City.
A short time later, they were opening for
Melanie at Carnegie Hall and after singing all their songs during the
show and their first encore, they decided to debut "One Toke" during the
second encore. "We
really didn't have anything else to sing to them," explains Tom Shipley.
"So we played `One Toke,' and the audience gave us a standing ovation.
The record company president was there, and he said `Record it!'" |
