Brewer & Shipley are actually both from the mid-west, a native Oklahoman
and a native Ohioan respective to their billing.
Like a lot of folk singers in the 1960s, Michael and Tom separately migrated to California
following the music business. They were living in Los Angeles working as staff
songwriters for A&M Records when they formed their partnership and released their
debut album "Down In
L.A." in 1968. But they grew tired of L.A. and moved back to
the mid-west in 1969, making Kansas City their home. They were
living in Kansas City for two years before "One Toke Over The Line"
catapulted
their career to a new level.
It is ironic that they are so often called a California duo, considering
the fact that they only lived there for about two years, and they both
really despised life on the coast.
Today
they live in the Ozark Mountains in southern Missouri.
